Today brought the greatest holiday gift of all times to this household: a genuine Volvo small quartz clock for the Enigma 240.
This small clock was created by Volvo engineers to provide a somewhat useful clock alternative when someone ordered the large tachometer which took the place of the original large clock slot in the dashboard. That was a lot to say.
As the tachometer was only useful in manual transmission Volvo 240’s, the tach option was dropped in 1985 when Volvo discontinued offering the manual transmissions in any 240 leaving these combos extremely rare finds.
Locating one of these big tach/small clock options is very tough but I was able to secure one from another rebuilder in California who was willing to part ways with his for but a small fortune and the promise I would reciprocate with some scarce part in the future. Deal.
The unit was typically California rust and corrosion-free and even the biodegradable cable harness was in fairly good shape.
Many of us are satisfied to have the big tach/small clock installed even if the clock only tells the correct time twice a day. In other words, most of these mini clocks no longer work! But, this one did.
Oh, hell, we admit it is still fun watching the tach go through its paces. Now, the hard part will be finding a time when I feel well enough to install it.
I’m just no longer going through my paces.
